October 5 - End of Season

Monday, the 5th of October, the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers will not be playing, and announces the end of the official season.

We would have loved to finish the season with a particularly spectacular outing, but the weather and people's schedules have conspired against. (Josh, take note - we are having WEATHER problems up here. Not like McMurdo Station, where the weather is pretty consistent from day to day!)

So, no big finish. We did have a great year, took on a range of courses, and our only regret is that we have not encouraged more to come out and enjoy the links with us. Note, I said links, not the game. The courses have been fine, ranging from good to really good. The weather has been supportive, for the most part, with some truly beautiful days thrown in. The game, on the other hand, well, if it wasn't for the bad shots, we'd have no score at all. The only days we managed to finish in the low 80's were when it wasn't too cold or too hot. You get my drift.

Anyway, it has been an enjoyable season, and we are looking forward to another one next year. Let your friends know, so that they can contact me and get on the email list.

In the meantime, watch this space - if a good day shows up, we may put out a call for any available flogger to join us.

No good days, then we'll see you next year.

September 28 - Cancelled

Monday, the 28th of September, the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers will not be playing.

I have already been outside for an hour this morning, and the weather is something only a serious golfer would endure.

More of the same is predicted for this afternoon, so I'm making the decision to cancel. If you want to go out, you're certainly welcome, but the rest of us are staying warm and dry.

Next week, I know some of the players are heading south early for Turkey Run, and I may be one of them. So I expect we will have nothing scheduled for next week either, but feel free to call or email and share your thoughts on the subject.

If the weather doesn't ease up, we may have played our last formal outing together for the year. There is still a shot, so I'll keep you posted.

September 21 - Indian Lake Hills

Monday, the 21st of September, the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers will be playing at Indian Lake Hills.

We have no reservations, but we will be able to walk on. Twilight rate is $20 with cart, so nine should be cheaper.

We will be leaving from John's house at 4 p.m. or my house at 4:05. Plan on teeing off at 5:00.

Looks like the rain has blown over, so the afternoon should be peachy, if not humid. Dark falls earlier now, so don't be late. We will be pushing to get in nine before it gets to dark to play.

Regards to our southernmost Flogger - no, not Bob Dryden in Florida, though we greet him affectionately, but Josh Wisner, currently camped out on the Antarctic ice. Stay warm! Think golf, and when it gets well and truly miserable, you can always wish you were in Michigan in the middle of January, when it might be a balmy (comparatively) 5 degrees above zero here.

September 14 - Pebblewood

Monday, the 14th of September, the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers will be playing at Pebblewood.

We have no reservations, but we will be able to walk on opposite the league.

John and I cannot be there, but you can probably figure out how to have fun without us.

For those of you that missed Monday two weeks ago, we had a super afternoon at Indian Lake Hills - the weather was perfect, and six of us went for eighteen. With the free passes, it was all for the price of a cart, which worked out to $14.00 a person. Not a bad day for the price!

September 7 - Labor Day - No League Play

Monday, the 7th of September, the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers will be celebrating Labor Day, so there is no scheduled activity. Feel free to coordinate an outing among yourselves, but I will be in San Diego, hosting a submarine reunion.

Next Monday, the 14th, plan on meeting at Pebblewood at 5:30.

I'll remind you later next week.

August 31 - Indian Lake Hills

Tonight, Monday, the 31st of August, the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers will be playing at Indian Lake Hills.

Here is the deal.

We were awarded eight passes for free greens fees (not the cart) for eighteen holes - five of those have already been claimed, leaving three available. First three to contact me gets a free pass. We may have more available, but I won't know until later.

Priority goes to those playing eighteen - if you can take a half day, you can join us at John's house a 12:30 and ride with, or you can meet us there about 1:30. If you can only make nine, I'll let you know how to get a hold of us on the course when you get there so we can get your pass to you. We'll try to meet you on the turn and you can join us for the back nine.

We have no reservations, but we will be able to walk on after we get a burger for those that didn't eat lunch. Leagues go off at four but the pro shop said getting on the back nine should be no problem for you nine-holers.

So meet us an John's house and join John, Bob Dryden, Jordan Klint, Doug Carlson and myself for an SWM Floggers afternoon of 18. I think I'm forgetting someone but that's the way it works these days.

See you there.

August 24 - Brookwood Golf Club

Tonight, Monday, the 24th of August, the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers will meet at Brookwood in Buchanan at 5:30 p.m.

We have no reservations, but we should be able to walk on.

John will be there, but I'll be at O'Hare sending my daughter off to Romania for 8 months.

Have fun at Brookwood - next week we will be at Indian Lake Hills, and I'm really looking forward to that.

August 17 - Pebblewood

Tonight, Monday, the 17th of August, thunderstorms are boiling up all around us and the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers will try to squeeze in a round anyway.

Meet at Pebblewood at 5:30 p.m. and give it a shot if it isn't lightning or thundering.

We have no reservations, but we should be able to walk on.

John and I both will be there, as well as my Virginia brother, Kent, so come out and give him a great Michigan welcome from the SWM Floggers.

See you out there.

August 10 - Brookwood Golf Course

Tonight, Monday, the 10th of August, it will probably be so hot we can't stand it, and the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers should probably hide indoors in the air-conditioned safety and comfort of home, but...

We haven't been very good at that sort of thing before anyway, so, meet at Brookwood at 5:30 p.m. and flog your little hearts out.

We have no reservations, but we should be able to walk on.

John will not be there - he is still recovering from a nasty case of something or other, and the heat only aggravates it. I cannot be there as I've taken over the responsibility for coaching the River Valley High School Boys Soccer team, and I have to squeeze in a team meeting tonight.

All in all, it looks like a day without the pleasurable and much sought after company of myself and the Grand Poo-bah, but my guess is you didn't show up to see us anyway.

Have a great round!

August 3 - Meadows Family Golf Center - Maybe!

Tonight, Monday, the 3rd of August, it will probably be raining, and consequently, the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers will be cowering indoors, wisely preferring the comfort of the barco-lounger to the cold and wet of a drizzly Monday.

On the other hand, it may clear up, and if it does, let's meet at the Meadows Family Golf Center on Shawnee at 5:30 and get a short round in if nothing else.

I picked the Meadows because it is close, short, and nobody will really mind if we do get rained out.

We have no reservations, but we should be able to walk on.

John will not be there - he is recovering from a nasty case of something or other, and I will only be there if I can get back from Riverside in time.

All in all, it looks like a day without golf, but if it's sunny, I'll see you at Meadows.

July 27 - Pebblewood Country Club

Tonight, Monday, the 27th of July, you will be teeing off at the Pebblewood Country Club on Jericho in Bridgman.

Tee times are 5:30 and 5:38 p.m. in the name of Moline. Coupons are in the Superbook. You are behind a league, so you can’t play through, but it should work out fine.

I will not be able to make it as I have a Park Board meeting to chair, but John is planning to be there.

Let John know if you are going to be there, so he can wait for you at the clubhouse.

See you next week.

Brad

July 20 - Berrien Hills Golf Club, Again!

Last week four of us worked the Berrien Hills front nine, or perhaps we should say, it worked us. But the weather was super and we had a great time anyway, despite our handicaps, and we are aiming to do it again on the back nine tonight.

Monday, the 20th of July, TODAY, we tee off at 5:30 and 5:40 p.m. at the Berrien Hills Golf Club in St. Joe, on the river.

Cost for nine holes with a cart comes to $28. There are coupons in the Superbook for buy one, get one, which knocks your cost down to $17.50, so don't forgot to team up with someone with a coupon.

Note: A collared shirt is required and no denim is allowed by the club dress code.

Tee times are reserved in the name Williamson.

John and I will both be there, but you can call me if you need to coordinate rides or anything.

July 13 - Berrien Hills Golf Club

If you missed last week, you definitely are not getting the hang of this weekly golf outing thing. We had a super time at the Michigan City North Course, a few great shots, a couple nice pars, John pulled in a decent birdie on a par 4, and we thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. One threesome walked for exercise, the other threesome rode, and it was a great evening to be out.

Monday, the 13th of July, we tee off at 5:30 and 5:40 p.m. at the Berrien Hills Golf Club.

Cost for nine holes with a cart comes to $30. There are coupons in the Superbook for buy one, get one, which knocks your cost down to $20.00, so don't forgot to team up with someone with a coupon.

Note: A collared shirt is required and no denim is allowed by the club dress code.

Tee times are reserved in the name Williamson.

John will be out of town, so call me if you need to coordinate rides or anything.

For those of you that haven’t joined the SWM Floggers at www.swmfloggers.org, this is a reminder that it’s time to sign up. While it’s not required for those occasional players, it is expected for folks that intend to join us every Monday.

The $10 registration fee helps cover the cost of the website, coordinating, and making arrangements, and lets us know you are serious. You can pay by credit card, bank account, or Paypal account, and you don’t need a Paypal account to make the payment.

For those of you that didn’t pay for last year, well, you know who you are. You should feel bad. Taking advantage of the rest of us like that. Shame on you.

Enough said. Don’t make me come after you. Feel free to use the payment button for 2008 so you can sleep well at night.

See you Monday at Berrien Hills!

July 6 - Michigan City Municipal North

Today we will be teeing off at 5:30 p.m. Michigan Time at the Michigan City Municipal North Golf Course on Warnke Road. This is the short course - don't go to the South course, which is the long one!

Sorry I missed last week at Pebblewood - I heard that there were eight of you, which is our current record for this year and that it was a great afternoon. I was tied up in Boston having to suffer through a mussel and lobster dinner at the Union Oyster House, so I couldn't be there. But I won't miss tonight.

John and I are leaving my house at about 4:45 if you want to coordinate rides.

Greens fees are $12.00 for unlimited holes, and carts are $8.00 per person for 9, or $15.00 per person for 18. Your cost is $20 for nine or $27 for eighteen if you ride.

Let me know if you are going to be there, so we can wait for you at the clubhouse.

Call John or Brad if you want to carpool down.

June 29 - Pebblewood

Monday the 29th of June, we will be teeing off at 6:00 p.m. at the Pebblewood Country Club on Jericho in Bridgman.

Tee times are 6:00 and 6:08 in the name of Moline. Coupons are in the Superbook.

I will not be able to make it as I have commitments in Boston, but John is planning to be there, provided the plant doesn't call him in.

Let John know if you are going to be there, so he can wait for you at the clubhouse.

John is on call, so he won't be carpooling so he doesn't have to abandon anybody if he gets paged.

June 22 - Blossom Trails

Monday the 22nd of June (today!), we will be teeing off at 5:30 p.m. at the Blossom Trails Golf Club on East Britain Avenue in Benton Harbor.

For those of you that missed last week at Michigan City, it was gorgeous. It went so well, we pushed through and played all 18. You should have been there.

Tonight, we don't need tee times, and should be able to get on the tee easily. The greens, that's another story!

John and I are leaving my house at about 4:45 if you want to coordinate rides.

For those of you that haven't been there, details and directions follow:

June 15th - Michigan City Municipal North Course

Monday the 15th of June (today!), we will be teeing off at 5:30 p.m. Michigan Time at the Michigan City Municipal North Golf Course on Warnke Road. This is the short course - don't go to the South course, which is the long one!

For those of you that missed last week at Brookwood in Buchanan, we had a beautiful evening. No rain, a little wind, cool and a nice sunset to boot. Looking forward to more of that this evening.

John and I are leaving my house at about 4:45 if you want to coordinate rides.

Greens fees are $15.00 ($9.00 for seniors!) for unlimited holes, and carts are $8.00 per person for 9, or $15.00 per person for 18. Your cost is $23 for nine or $30 for eighteen if you ride.

Let me know if you are going to be there, so we can wait for you at the clubhouse.

Call John or Brad if you want to carpool down.

June 8th - Brookwood Golf Course

Monday, the 8th of June.

Day Two of the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers weather hostage crisis.

Last week it was cold, wet, darn near sleet, and this week it is threatening thunderstorms.

Weatherman says 70%, but the radar looks as if it might blow over. God only knows.

One things for certain, the weather will either get better, get worse, or stay the same. Of that I am sure.

We have tee times at Brookwood under the name Moline for 5:36 and 5:44.

John and I are planning on being there. EIther we’ll get wet or we won’t. Bring an umbrella - the carts don’t have lids.

June 1st - Opening Day - Berrien Hills Golf Club

Spring has sprung,
the grass is riz',
I wonder where my nine iron is?

Opening Day has arrived!

It's a new year. The winter months should have given you time to get your clubs repaired, cleaned, and tuned for spring. (I didn't.) Six months off should be plenty of time to forget all those bad habits. (I'm sure I haven't.) The cold gloom of winter gives way to spring, making it easy to look forward to a warm, sunny day on the links. (I am!)

Which means it's time for the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers to get their collective act together, and set out for another season of adventure.

Monday, the 1st of June, we tee off at 5:30 and 5:40 p.m. at the Berrien Hills Golf Club front nine.

This is a beautiful course that runs along the St. Joseph River across from the hospital in St. Joe. It was private for many years, and is now open to the public. You do not want to miss this outing.

Cost for nine holes with a cart comes to $30. There are coupons in the Superbook for buy one, get one, which knocks your cost down to $20, so don't forgot to team up with someone with a coupon.

Note: A collared shirt is required and no denim is allowed by the club dress code.

Tee times are reserved in the name Moline.

October 13th - End of Season

It must be the end of the season (or my mind is going) when I type the Monday email for SWM Floggers and then forget to send it out.

Maybe it is just God's way of saying that the official season is over.

We've had a good one from start to finish. Despite weather and other schedule commitments, we've had anywhere from 4 to 12 players on the course on a given Monday, and everyone reports that they had a good time - or at least as good a time as you can have when you play like we do.

So consider this the last email for a while - some of us may get together for the few remaining Mondays before it gets too cold, and if we do, I'll let you know.

Otherwise, expect to hear from me in the spring, when we start the 2009 season for the Southwest Michigan Fraternal League of Ordinary Golfers.

It has been my pleasure to be a part of this adventure.

Your scribe and humble minion,

Brad

October 6th - Pebblewood

Well, we seem to be reaching the end of the season. Last week was a wash with the rain, and though this week looks better, there is still risk of bad weather on the radar.

So, if it isn’t raining, then Monday the 6th of October, we will tee off at 5:30 p.m. at Pebblewood in Bridgman.

At the moment, I don't know if the league is still playing, so you do not have a tee time, but if you show up at 5:20 or so, and push to get on, you should be able to squeeze in behind the league players if they are still there.

If you are trying to coordinate with others who might be going, cc: me on your emails, or let me know by phone or email if you are going, so I can answer when folks ask me who else will be out there. No need to reply if you can't go, but tell me if you are planning on it.

September 29th - Pebblewood (rained out)

The season is winding down, but we are still at it. I mean, it’s not like it’s snowing or anything.

Consequently, if it isn’t raining, then Monday the 29th of September we will be teeing off at 5:30 p.m. at Pebblewood in Bridgman.

John might not be there, I can’t be be (Park Board meeting), but I did get responses from enough of you, so off we go.

Another league will be ahead of you, so you do not have a tee time, but if you show up at 5:20 or so, and push to get on, you should be able to squeeze in behind the league players.

September 22nd - Pebblewood

Monday the 22nd of September, we will be teeing off at 6:00 p.m. at Pebblewood in Bridgman.

John can't be there, I may not be - don't know yet, but I did get responses from enough of you, so off we go.

Another league will be ahead of you, but you should get off at 6:00, no problemo. No tee time reservation - the pro shop said just show up.

See you out there, Read More...

September 22nd - Who's In?

For today, Monday the 22nd of September, if you would like to play, you must call or email me and let me know.

I will make reservations if at least 4 of you want to play today. John can't be there, and I may not be able to.

If you're interested, I'll set it up, but I need to know by, say, 2pm.

August 25th - Pebblewood

Monday the 25th of August, we will be teeing off at 6:00 p.m. at Pebblewood in Bridgman.

If you felt like you missed something last week by not being at Brookwood - rest easy. It didn’t go so well for any of us, but we had a great time. When we realized we wouldn’t finish before sundown, we switched to best-ball, and still barely made par. Yikes! But everyone reported a good time, so it was worth the trip.

Tee times are 6:00 and 6:08 in the name of Moline.

I will not be there - Park Board meeting, but don’t let that stop you.

August 11th - Pebblewood

Monday the 11th of August, we will be teeing off at 6:15 p.m.at Pebblewood in Bridgman.

For those of you that missed last week, we played the Michigan City North Course front nine, which was beautiful, and had a terrific time right up until the head of my driver came unglued on the number three tee and was last seen going across the South Shore Line railroad tracks headed north and up. Even a concerted effort with a metal detector on Wednesday was not successful in recovering it.

That means that my 1 wood is now the safest club in my bag, at least until I get it replaced. Oh well.

Tee times are 6:15 and 6:23 in the name of Williamson.

John and I may not be there - working in the cabin all week end, so don't wait for us - but we are trying and expect to be there unless things go wrong.

August 4th - Michigan City Municipal Golf Course - North

Monday the 4th of August, we will be teeing off at 6 p.m. Michigan Time at the Michigan City Municipal North Golf Course on Warnke Road.

For those of you that missed last week, we played the back nine, which was beautiful, and had a terrific time. We were the last ones off for the day so the six of us played together, making for a long nine, but it was a real pleasure, chatting it up, trading verbal abuse, and generally enjoying the company and the game. This week we will attack the front nine.

If you that haven’t heard yet, the evening was punctuated by such enjoyable moments as this humble scribe and minion’s birdie on the 314 yard par 4 number 16, including a decent 180 yard 5 iron slightly into the rough at the bend, an 8 iron onto the green in regulation, and a truly awe inspiring 23 foot putt, Just enough to keep me coming back, and if you think I’m bragging, well, I am, but all you need to do is ask the other five about my score and you will realize that one thing is for certain, I’m consistently inconsistent. But, I digress...

Greens fees are $12.00 for unlimited holes after 3 p.m., and carts are $8.00 per person for 9, or $15.00 per person for 18. Your cost is $20 for nine or $27 for eighteen if you ride.

Let me know if you are going to be there, so we can wait for you at the clubhouse.

July 28th - Michigan City Municipal Golf Course - North

Monday the 28th, we will be teeing off at 6 p.m. Michigan Time at the Michigan City Municipal Golf Course on Warnke Road.

This is a sweet little par 60 executive course, with hills and water but not too challenging. We should have time to play eighteen - after all, how long can 60 strokes take?

Greens fees are $12.00 for unlimited holes after 3 p.m., and carts are $8.00 per person for 9, or $15.00 per person for 18. Your cost is $20 for nine or $27 for eighteen if you ride.

Costs for nine holes include greens fees of $17 and cart fee of $11 for a total of $28. There are coupons in the Superbook for buy one, get one, which knocks your cost down to $19.50, so don't forgot to team up with someone with a coupon.

June 16th - Berrien Hills Golf Club

Tonight, the 16th of June, we tee off at 5:50 and 6:00 p.m. at the Berrien Hills Golf Club. We tried to do this last week, but the weather trumped us and we gave up and stayed home. So this week we try again.

This is a beautiful course that runs along the St. Joseph River across from the hospital in St. Joe. It was private for many years, and is now open to the public. You do not want to miss this outing.

Costs for nine holes include greens fees of $17 and cart fee of $11 for a total of $28. There are coupons in the Superbook for buy one, get one, which knocks your cost down to $19.50, so don't forgot to team up with someone with a coupon.

June 9th Outing at Berrien Hills Golf Club

Outing Tonight at Pebblewood

Tee times for tonight, June 2nd, are 6:00 and 6:08 at Pebblewood in Bridgman. Hey, didn't we do this just a few weeks ago? Yes, but since John and I are playing in the Young Life outing today at Chikaming Country Club, we'll barely be able to get there by six, so we picked the closest course. I'll be out there as well as John, so come on out and join us for nine, as we finish our twenty-seven!

Opening Day! No kidding!

Opening Day is here at last! We will tee off on the front nine at Brookwood at 5:36 so don't say you haven't been told. Emails will follow to all members. John Moline, er, the Grand Poo-bah will be on hand to lead off the festivities, er, the great little white ball hunt. See you in the rough!

Opening Day, One More Time...

Now the weather isn't looking so hot for Monday the 28th. If we have enough hardy souls, we may try it anyway. If not, then opening day will be May 2nd. We'll let you know.

Opening Day, absolutely, finally, maybe, well...

Well, fellow floggers, it could be this Monday. We may not know for sure until Sunday, but if we have enough players, we'll be out there Monday, the 28th. It all depends on registrations.

Some folks have been confused over the play times. We've updated the FAQ to clarify, but this should help.

Day: Mondays

Meeting Time: In Bridgman/Sawyer area to caravan/carpool to the course. 5:00

Tee Time: Between 5:30 and 6:00 depending on location and schedule.

Opening Day?

Well, it's April 21st, and we still don't have our act together. Delays in getting the word out to everyone have resulted in a slow start, so we are still gathering members and momentum. Consequently, no golf today.

Try to contain your emotion.

As those registrations keep rolling in, we may actually be able to put together a foursome next week, so if we can, then the 28th will be the new opening day.

Encourage your friends to sign up, and let's get out there as soon as we can!
